The Salesians live in communities that are relatively autonomous, although accountable to the Provincial Superior and his Council.
Each community has a Rector who is responsible for the spiritual well being of the members and the implementation of the mission. Decision making occurs at House Council meetings.
The community at the Salesian Institute, Cape Town, is the oldest in the Vice-Province and was established in 1910. The solid building is landmark on Somerset Road, on the corner of Chiappini Street.
The community runs the following Youth Projects:

The Lansdowne Community is situated on Imam Haron Road, along the M5. Here the Salesians established an agricultural school in 1923. The farm was eventually closed in the late 1940’s and moved up to Daleside (Walkerville) in Gauteng. The school – Savio College – continued until 1976. Since then part of the former school property has been used for a variety of youth activities and at the moment it is used by the Santos Soccer Club.
The parish of Our Lady Help of Christians was established in 1932 and the present church was built in 1960. The parishes of Hanover Park (1972) and Westridge (1977) are also staffed by members of the Lansdowne community.
The Life Choices Project, a behaviour change and HIV/AIDS education and awareness programme has been run from here since 2004.

The Walkerville community (1949), is situated on a farm along the Randvaal Road (R557), Walkerville, south of Johannesburg. It incorporates the Bosco Youth Centre, which is popular as a conference and retreat centre and is ideal for large groups of youth who love the wide open space and swimming pool.
The LoveMatters programme has been offered here since October 2001 as a residential behaviour change programme. It is popular among schools from all over Gauteng and surrounding provinces, with teaching staff reporting noticeable positive changes in the students.
The excellent Michael Rua Primary and Intermediate School situated nearby was established for farm children from the area and is now classed as a public school on private property with a Catholic ethos. Being in a rural setting, many of the learners are bussed daily.

Tributes to Dearly Departed Brothers
“When it happens that a Salesian yields up his life whilst working for souls, you can say that the Congregation has registered a great triumph and that on it will descend in abundance the blessings of heaven” (Don Bosco)
Eternal rest grant unto them, oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen
